How We Work

Ideas & Concept Design

Step 01 • Ideas and Measured Survey

We offer free, no obligation meetings with clients at the start of any residential architecture project. Here, we’ll discuss your requirements and ideas. We’ll then carry out a full measured survey of the property prior to preparing the concept design drawings.

Developing the design and planning

Step 02 • Concept Design

Upon completion of the measured survey we will prepare the concept design drawings based on our discussions and the brief provided. In many cases client request 3D sketches so that they can visualise the end result.

Planning

Step 03 • Planning

Once a design has been agreed we will prepare all the drawings and documents required for a planning application. Once an application has been submitted we are in regular contact with the planning department to enable as swift and straightforward a planning approval as possible.

Technical Drawings

Step 04 • Technical Drawings

Almost all building work requires building control approval. We produce a full set of technical drawings that comply with current regulations and are suitably detailed for the builder. We will guide you through the building control process and supply any additional information required.

On-Site Support

Step 05 • Construction and On-Site Support

We will assist you with obtaining competitive tenders from contractors, review their proposals, and provide guidance during the selection process. We also offer an on-site inspection service where we make regular site visits. We'll ensure everything is built according to the drawings and the workmanship is of a high standard.

Daniel Matthias

Daniel is an Architectural Technologist and Director of Daniel Matthias Architecture Ltd. He launched the company in 2011 and has successfully built up the business to where it is today. Daniel has more than 20 years’ experience in architecture and the construction industry. He is a keen gym enthusiast and has recently embraced the chaos of family life with a young child on the go.

Helen Brumby

Helen is an Architect who has worked for DMA since 2020. After over 15 years working in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Helen brings experience from many sectors, including residential, education, healthcare and ecclesiastical. Her main passion is working with residential clients to realise the potential of their home. Away from the office Helen is involved in her local Church and a committee member of her local pre-school. When time allows, she is happy to take a break and read a good book.

Evan joined Daniel Matthias Architecture Ltd. in the summer of 2024 as an apprentice Architectural Technologist. He is currently training to become a qualified architectural technologist through a combination of on the job experience and college studies. With a strong enthusiasm for the industry, Evan is eager to expand his knowledge and skills. Outside of work, he is a dedicated lifelong rugby player and avid gym goer.

Adam Edwards

Joining DMA as the Senior Architectural Technologist in June 2025, Adam has over 15 years’ experience working in a range of sectors such as Residential, Agricultural and Equestrian. With an eye for detail, Adam’s main passion is in the challenge of transforming sketch designs into working drawings and seeing a project develop on site. Outside of work Adam will either be in the gym or, when the weather permits, tending to his latest crop of fruit and veg.

Just completed a renovation of our 1960s bungalow with garage conversion, utility room renovation and replacement of a flat roof with a pitched roof. I found Helen very helpful and supportive throughout this process. The flat roof replacement had the potential to be particularly challenging due to the somewhat unusual footprint of the building. The solution she came up was brilliant. We are extremely pleased with the end result and would thoroughly recommend this company.

We have never engaged with an architect before, but it’s hard to imagine we could have found a better firm to deal with than Daniel Matthias Architecture. From the very first meeting, we knew we were in safe hands. Daniel delivered the initial designs rapidly and accurately. Changes to our requirements were handled promptly, professionally, and with fastidious attention to detail. Daniel and his team were on-hand to help with the selection of a contractor, and maintained a helpful and proactive presence throughout the project, ensuring it was brought to a successful conclusion and that any issues were resolved rapidly and to our complete satisfaction.

Daniel Matthias was referred to us by a prospective builder, to do the drawings for our '80s rear extension remodel.

We'd talked to a couple of other architects before meeting Daniel to discuss the project, but as soon as we met Daniel at the initial site viewing we knew we'd found the right practice for us. First impressions were how friendly and professional he was, taking much more time to understand our requirements and making alternate suggestions, despite our project only being relatively modest. Daniel also explained the various stages of the process in detail.

We've just received the stage 2 Concept drawings from Daniels colleague Helen (who was equally friendly, professional and understanding of our requirements), slightly ahead of schedule despite it fast approaching the festive break.

We're now excited to progress the project through to completion with DMA in the New Year.

His colleague was the architect for our work and she did an excellent job considering the amount of changes we asked for.

Daniel listened to our initial thoughts and ideas for the Orangery. He then proposed some ideas, which enhanced our original vision. Then, using his design expertise, he has turned the vision into reality. The Orangery is a superb space that can be used throughout the year. The space is flooded with natural light, from the bifold doors, the large window and the two rooflights. We originally planned to have one roof latern, but are so glad we took on board the proposal from Daniel to have 2 rooflights. Daniel dealt with all of the planning stage, providing all the necessary information for the Orangery to secure approval by planning. He also appointed a building inspector to ensure the Construction was in accordance with the design and therefore compliant with the building regulations. Daniel is totally professional, was so easy to work with, and his design was meticulous in its detail, which greatly assisted the Contractor during the construction phase. I fully recommend Daniel for any architectural work you may be considering.

We were introduced to Daniel and his team by our planning consultant. Daniel went out of his way to help us, very quickly, create some rough plans for a pre-app. Once we were in a position to make a full planning application we went with Daniel again as he'd helped us out previously, this was absolutely the correct decision on our part.
We had a good idea of how we wanted our self-build to look and Daniel took all of this on board. He turned our poor sketches and pipe dreams into a workable home that flows perfectly.

There is always a risk working with someone for the first time, my advice to anyone considering using his services is 'take the risk, you will not be disappointed'.
